Understanding and Applying Your Strengths to Win at Work
Performance Reviews and "Opportunities for Improvement"
After many years of going through annual performance reviews in my corporate career, I was introduced to a new way of thinking. This new way of thinking was called "strengths" and was introduced to me through Strengths Finder assessment and the book "Now, Discover Your Strengths" by Marcus Buckingham and Donald Clifton.
For years I had experienced personally and delivered the message to emplyees about their "opportunities for improvement" and the weaknesses they need to fix in order to continue to advance their career. Strengths was a different way of thinking. Get people to spend more of their time working on the things that they are really good at and like and they will perform better. Don't try to make them well rounded, find what they excel at and help them do that at an even higher level. I loved it and it connected to my experience in sports. In coaching youth soccer and football, I have always had to evaluate the talent on the team and figure out how to make the sum of the parts greater than the the individual players.
Introducing StandOut
Now there is a tool and an experience that can shine a bright light on what your strengths are but also how to apply them in your business and work. The tools is called StandOut. It is an online assessment and a book by Marcus Buckingham.
